A landmark University of California, Los Angeles study now suggests that women have a larger behavioral repertoire than men in the face of stress. “It seems that the hormone oxytocin is released as part of the stress responses in a woman; it buffers the “fight or flight” response and encourages her to tend children and gather with other women, instead,” reports Laurel Cousino Klein, Ph.D., who co-authored the study.“When she actually engages in this tending or befriending, [such] studies suggest that more oxytocin is released, which further counters stress and produces a calming effect.”

This week my CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) basket was full of the best of surprises; lots of herbs, and the baby greens look glorious, as do the little red radishes. So we make some salads with the bag of mixed greens and load them up with morsels of goat cheese sprinkled about. The salads are dressed with a bit of vinaigrette and quickly consumed. Then I smell the basil wafting its way to my still-hungry senses. A familiar feeling comes over me and I know what must be done. I’m ready to prepare my first batch of pesto for the year.

It’s been 29 years since the movie 9 to 5, opened in movie theaters around the world. The comedic story of three underpaid women plotting revenge against their sexist boss, carried the torch of equality in the workplace into the 1980’s. That torch is still burning brightly and delighting theater audiences in the new Broadway smash, 9 to 5: The Musical at the Marriott Marquis Theater in New York City. This new musical comedy, based on the hit movie, features the memorable title song from the film, along with 18 original songs from multiple Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Dolly Parton, one of the original stars from the movie (along with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin).

Ten million Americans suffer with osteoporosis and another 34 million have low bone mass and high risk for osteoporosis, according to the National Osteoporosis Foundation. For anyone who has been diagnosed with osteoporosis or osteopenia (low bone density for our age, but not low enough be a risk factor for fracture), it is important to know that most likely, the bones’ ability to develop has not been affected. We have simply stopped “loading” them.
The good news is that it’s unlikely that bone density is low throughout our body, and we can begin simple weight-bearing exercises at any time. This signals the bone to start growing. Ribs, wrists, hips and the spine are the most common places prone to bone loss. The main reason is simply underuse. Contemporary habits in our culture often don’t load these joints to their fullest potential.
